Canções da America
From the Musical Imagination of Clarice Assad

Join Grammy-nominated composer and performer Clarice Assad for an evening that explores the musical tapestry of her native Brazil and South America at large. A powerful communicator renowned for her musical scope and versatility, Assad is a significant artistic voice in the classical, world music, pop, and jazz genres, renowned for her evocative colors, rich textures, and diverse stylistic range.

The first half of the program will feature selections from Assad’s chamber music, performed by Levine faculty members. Canções da America draws from chants, rhythms, and dances of the immigrant, indigenous, and African peoples that make up the melting pot of cultures in South America. Obrigado explores the Yorùbán-influenced music of the Umbanda religion of Brazil.

The evening will conclude with Assad joining the ensemble to perform a song set that explores a range of South American musical genres, including bossa nova, tango, baiao, and more. The program features classic songs by Nascimento, Jobim, and Piazzolla, arranged and sung by Assad.

Levine Faculty Performers:
Leslie Silverfine and Susan Katsarelis, violins
Joelle Arnhold, viola
Vasily Popov, cello
