What could be better than combining the wonderful quality of the human voice with the hip sound of jazz? Led by pianist Wayne Wilentz, The Capital City Voices is an established, premier jazz choir that has been delighting DC area audiences for years and has found a home at Levine! Capital City Voices at Levine stays in the tradition of great vocal jazz groups such as Manhattan Transfer and Take 6, but with a style uniquely its own. Mix in a bit of R&B and jazz with a touch of gospel, and you have a recipe for a rewarding (and fun!) vocal experience. Capital City Voices at Levine welcomes most levels of singers, from beginners to advanced vocalists, semi-professionals, and music teachers. Musical arrangements reflect classic American and Brazilian jazz styles, and at each session singers learn something new about music, jazz, and their own voices. Levine and The Capital City Voices remain committed to ensuring the health and safety of all our students. Given the risks inherent in group singing, and limitations of synchronous online music making technology, for Fall 2020 The Capital City Voices has refocused the class away from live performance and onto the skills necessary for group singing in this genre. Each two hour rehearsal includes: ? Learning original vocal arrangements part by part? Instruction on vocal technique and its application to group singing? Training the ear to hear jazz harmonies? Developing an understanding of jazz theory. No audition required. The group meets for 15 weeks per semester, culminating in one or more virtual video recording projects.
