(Ages 7 – 13)

These unique chamber group classes are modeled after the small string and wind bands of the various European courts in the 18th century (the times of Bach, Handel, Haydn, and Mozart). The ensembles usually consist of 5-6 violins and 2-3 cellos and sometimes include woodwind and brass instruments. The classes help the young students to develop their note reading and ensemble skills.

Course materials and music are determined by the instrumentation of the enrolled students. The young musicians study a wide variety of musical styles from classical to jazz, prepare three concert programs throughout the year, and repeat each program in two performances.

Performances are planned for mid-November, the beginning of March, and the end of April (exact dates and times to be announced).

In case of on-line performances, students will be taught to record their videos with an MP3 file that will be sent to them. They will need to record and submit an MP4 file to the instructor. Levine will create and broadcast a split screen video performance.

If performances are live, proper social distancing will be observed.

Please note: An audition is required. Because of the intensity of this program, regular attendance is required. At least one year of private lessons and the ability to read music is required. For string players, skills in vibrato and shifting are not required. For more information, and to schedule an audition, please contact Vasily Popov, Chamber Music Program Chair, at chambermusic@levinemusic.org.
