This class helps students complete the “journey” from our popular Elementary Music classes to private instrument study, offering older children more structured learning of complex musical ideas, note-reading and basic theory through the exploration of the music and language of different countries and cultures.

The class benefits students who aren’t quite ready for one-on-one private instruction, preparing them adequately with supplemental skills for learning an instrument or developing their voice. It is also intended for students who have recently begun private instrument study, as they benefit from the additional learning and reinforcement of musical skills and concepts. Students develop and perform in multiple disciplines including singing, playing pitched and un-pitched percussion, instruments,* and movement/dance. This course also focuses on student composition and performance. “Visiting Instruments” continue throughout the year.

Class activities and benefits include:

  • Creation of musical forms
  • Reading musical notation, including melodic and rhythmic concepts
  • Increased awareness of ensemble
  • Development of rhythmic accuracy
  • Strengthened pitch matching and independent singing abilities
  • Expression of musical ideas
  • Improvisation within the pentatonic and diatonic scales
  • Demonstration of musical creativity through composition
  • Exploration of various tonalities

The class consists of:

  • 45 minutes of a live online weekly class
  • 10 minutes of Community Time,
  • Access to portal with music and recordings of class songs, as well as monthly newsletter
  • Access to monthly Facebook Live Sing-Along with First Music Faculty

Please note: All classes consist of a period of instructional time followed by 10 minutes of Community Time to talk with our expert teachers, ask questions about music and child development, meet other families, and provide social time for children.
