Snowday: A Refreshing Vocal Experience

About

What sounds like a band but doesn’t have instruments? Snowday! This dynamic quintet creates unique music using just their voices to delight audiences of all ages! Snowday’s talented singers present upbeat songs and moving rhythms that trace the history of a cappella singing and demonstrate how to create its harmonic parts — including a vocal drumming lesson with the audience. Their broad musical experience in barbershop, opera, and contemporary singing is paired with a mastery of teaching to uplift and engage everyone. This mix of energetic men and women is excited to share their lifelong love of music. And hey — doesn’t everyone love a snow day?

Snowday was founded in early 2008 with the mission of bringing a cappella and vocal music into mainstream education. Started as a collaboration of several DC area groups, Snowday brings a diverse background of performance and education to the stage. All members of the group started singing and playing instruments from a very young age, discovering contemporary a cappella in high school and college.

The group loves bringing a dose of fun to community and private events. As part of the Artivate roster, Snowday travels to dozens of schools each year, and members are very active in the local, national, and international a cappella communities. While they spend a lot of time touring US schools, they have also traveled internationally, including a trip to Russia as Arts Envoys with the US Department of State.

Performances

Be Aca-Awesome
Music performance, especially a cappella, is a great way to develop real-world skills like public speaking, self-confidence, and teamwork. In this performance, audiences watch as the newest member of Snowday transforms from a timid newcomer into a seasoned performer as they find their way through music. Students enjoy upbeat, chart-topping hits while taking away numerous lessons on how to find the strength to be themselves.

An A Cappella Musical History
Snowday takes students on a whirlwind journey through time, tracing the history of a capella singing from its roots in chant, barbershop, and doo-wop to present-day pop and rock. Students are introduced to elements of music theory – including harmonic voice parts and vocal drumming (beatbox) techniques – and then invited to learn harmony parts and sing together. This energizing performance explores the extensive capabilities of the human voice and inspires creativity and musicality in students of all ages.

Snowday was fantastic. I got a lot of enthusiastic and very positive feedback from students and teachers… (parents) told me how their son/daughter came home from school that day and were raving about the assembly at school that morning.

– Music Teacher, Cedar Lane School (HCPSS)

The response to this group was phenomenal. Our students were quiet and listened and participated beautifully. Snowday uses a lot of humor while they teach the History of A Cappella – they took their subject and made it extremely interesting.
