Education

Ben received his BM from the Manhattan School of Music before going on to earn his MM from The Juilliard School, GD from New England Conservatory, and his DMA from Michigan State University.

As a Performer

Cellist Ben Capps enjoys a versatile performing career as a soloist, chamber musician, orchestral principal, collaborator, and creator. Capps has appeared as a recitalist and principal cellist at major performance venues throughout the world, touring extensively and recording as a solo recitalist and chamber musician. 

Ben is the principal cellist with the innovative, DC-based chamber orchestra Post Classical Ensemble and can be heard in concert around the DMV area with other exciting groups, such as the Inscape Chamber Orchestra.
Ben can be heard on LP Classics, Innova Records, Tzadik Records, Sony, and Naxos. He was also featured on Vermont Public Radio and in concert, performing the complete cello sonatas of Beethoven, Mendelssohn, and Brahms. Ben is dedicated to contemporary music and art forms, experimental sounds, electronics, and world music.

As a Teacher

In addition to Levine, Ben currently serves as an Adjunct Professor of Music at Georgetown University, where he leads the chamber music department. Previously, Ben has taught at Hunter College (CUNY), Stamford Music & Arts Academy, and as a teaching assistant at Juilliard.

Teaching Philosophy

Ben’s approach focuses on how we can most easily use our body to make playing easier, taking one or two steps forward each lesson.
