Inspired by music’s ability to capture the qualities of sorrow and hope, faculty member Joseph Gotoff and guest artist Wan-Chi Su present an evening of music for cello and piano from the 19th, 20th, and 21st Centuries. Join us as we explore the music of composers from across the globe and hear their attempts to convey that which cannot be put into words.
The program showcases a range of emotions, from Gabriel Fauré’s elegant and dreamy Cello Sonata No. 1 to Clara Schumann’s Three Romances, showcasing her remarkable creativity and compositional expertise. It continues through modern works, such as Ellen Taaffe Zwilich’s expressive Lament for Cello and Piano and Jessie Montgomery’s Peace, which was written a month into the COVID-19 quarantine in hopes of finding peace in times of sadness.
Featuring: Joseph Gotoff, cello; Wan-Chi Su, piano
