This introductory class is for any young musician who seeks a grounding in the basic ideas and skills that help us to make music and to understand the music we hear.

Students will develop skills of sight-reading, rhythm, listening, and composition. Topics include counting rhythms, reading notes on the staff, scales, key signatures, intervals, chords, and musical signs and terms. Students compose a short melody as a final project.

Class meetings are via Zoom. Lessons and assignments are completed in an online classroom using prerecorded lessons and music theory software. In weekly Zoom sessions, students will review their work, complete exercises as a group, and collaborate with peers. A student who misses a scheduled Zoom session may still complete weekly coursework in the online classroom.

Please note: A placement test for Level 1 is not required, but we suggest that you take our free online placement test to determine whether this or a more advanced class would be best for you. After completing the test, you will receive a class recommendation and registration link from the Department Chair.

For a complete description of the skills taught in Theory Level 1, please see the Music Theory Syllabus. The level corresponds to Level 1 of Levine’s Keyboard Skills curriculum and is appropriate for all instruments and voice.
