In Theory Level 2 students continue their study of rhythm, reading notes on the staff, scales, key signatures, intervals, chords, and musical signs and terms. Level 2 introduces basic musical forms and harmony. Students apply these skills to a short composition project at the end of the class. Levine’s music theory classes feature engaging, interactive learning designed to help young musicians develop sight-reading, rhythm, listening, and composition skills.
Class meetings are via Zoom. Students also have access to an innovative online classroom, with an integrated music theory software suite. Lessons and assignments are completed with prerecorded videos and software. In the Zoom sessions, students review work, ask questions of the instructor, and collaborate with peers. A student who misses a scheduled session may still complete the lesson and assignment using the prerecorded video and integrated software.
Please note: Students should have previously completed Theory Level 1, or else should register for a free online placement test to determine placement in this or another theory level. After completing the test, you will receive a class recommendation and registration link from the Department Chair.
For a complete description of the skills taught in Theory Level 2, please see the Music Theory Syllabus. The level corresponds to Level 2 of Levine’s Keyboard Skills curriculum and is appropriate for all instruments and voice.
