In Theory Level 5 students continue their study of rhythm, scales, key signatures, intervals, chords, and musical signs and terms. Level 5 introduces syncopated rhythms, pentatonic and blues scales, cadences in keyboard-style texture, and sonata-allegro form. This level includes two music history units on the Classical era and American blues. Students compose a blues composition as a final project. Levine’s music theory classes feature engaging, interactive learning designed to help young musicians develop sight-reading, rhythm, listening, and composition skills.
Class meetings are via Zoom. Lessons and assignments are completed in an online classroom using prerecorded lessons and music theory software. In weekly Zoom sessions, students will review their work, complete exercises as a group, and collaborate with peers. A student who misses a scheduled Zoom session may still complete weekly coursework in the online classroom.
Please note: Students should have previously completed Theory Level 4, or else should register for a free online placement test to determine placement in this or another theory level. After completing the test, you will receive a class recommendation and registration link from the Department Chair.
For a complete description of the skills taught in Theory Level 5, please see the Music Theory Syllabus. The level corresponds to Level 5 of Levine’s Keyboard Skills curriculum and is appropriate for all instruments and voice.
