Jamie Roberts, oboe

Jamie Roberts, Chicago native, joined the National Symphony Orchestra as Assistant Principal Oboe in September 2011. Jamie holds a M.M. in Oboe Performance from the New England Conservatory of Music and a B.M. from Indiana University, and a Professional Studies Certificate from the Colburn Conservatory. She has studied with John Ferrillo, Anne Gabriele, Linda Strommen, and Allan Vogel. Jamie was Principal Oboe of the Portland Opera Orchestra from 2007 to 2011, and has also performed with the Oregon Symphony, San Diego Symphony, and LA Chamber Orchestra. She was Principal Oboe of the 2006 New York String Orchestra Seminar at Carnegie Hall. Jamie has spent her summers at festivals, including the Music Academy of the West, and the Aspen Music Festival, and as faculty at the Boston University Tanglewood Institute, NSO’s Summer Music Institute, and the Miami Music Festival. Jamie is also one of the founding members of the Hubbard Quartet, and LeDroit Chamber Players, a community chamber music organization based in Washington DC.

Joey Grimmer, bassoon

Joseph Grimmer joined the Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestra and the Washington National Opera Orchestra as Principal Bassoon in 2015, the faculty of the University of Maryland’s School of Music in 2017, and is in his first season as Principal Bassoon with the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra. He previously served as Principal Bassoon with the Jacksonville Symphony, was a member of the Houston Grand Opera Orchestra, and spent the 2013-14 season as Acting Assistant Principal Bassoon with the Naples Philharmonic. He has performed as Guest Principal Bassoon with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Grand Rapids Symphony, IRIS Orchestra, Savannah Philharmonic, and Windsor Symphony Orchestra. He also performed with the Baltimore Symphony, Milwaukee Symphony and Arizona Musicfest Orchestras. Since 2012, Mr. Grimmer has held the Assistant Principal Bassoon position with the Colorado Music Festival Orchestra in his hometown of Boulder, Colorado.

Mr. Grimmer has been a fellow at the Lucerne, Aspen, and Sarasota Music Festivals and was a 2009 prize winner at the International Double Reed Society’s Young Artist Bassoon Competition in Birmingham, England. A dedicated teacher, in addition to his position at the University of Maryland, he is also a faculty member of the Miami Music Festival and maintains a private bassoon studio. He previously taught at the Shenandoah Conservatory and has given masterclasses in Spain, Sweden, Canada, and throughout the USA. Mr. Grimmer earned his Master of Music degree from Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music, where he studied with Benjamin Kamins. He also studied with William Winstead at the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music, where he earned his Bachelor of Music degree.

Jamila Tekalli, piano

Pianist Jamila Tekalli teaches private and group classes as a member of the piano faculty at Levine. She has performed as a soloist and collaborative musician in concerts, festivals and competitions in throughout the United States, Canada, and Central and South America with performances at the Kennedy Center, Carnegie Hall, the Adrienne Arsht Center and New World Center. Her distinctions include Finalist of the Stravinsky International Piano Competition, Third Prize and Finalist of the Baldwin National Piano Competition, and Winner of the Steinway Indiana Collegiate Piano Competition and Indiana University Concerto Competition.

Her chamber music studies and residencies have taken her to the Banff Centre, the Bowdoin International Music Festival, Keyboard Institute at Mannes, and Boston University’s Tanglewood Institute, studying with Robert McDonald, Gilbert Kalish, Dawn Upshaw, members of the Brentano String Quartet and Tokyo String Quartet. Her chamber performances and workshops have taken her throughout Mexico, performing chamber concerts, teaching piano workshops, and concerto performances with her brother and violinist, Suliman Tekalli. Performances have taken her to Libya in 2010 with her brother, serving as American Cultural Ambassadors promoting musical and cultural exchange through the U.S. Embassy.

Jamila holds a D.M.A. in Piano Performance from the University of Miami, a M.A. from University of Central Florida and a B.M. from Indiana University with studies with Evelyne Brancart, Arnaldo Cohen, Laurent Boukobza, Tian Ying and Santiago Rodriguez. Dr. Tekalli served as Lecturer in Music at Barry University in Miami, Florida. She resides in D.C. and serves as Director of Music at Pilgrim Lutheran Church and the Music at Pilgrim Concert Series. Dr. Tekalli is a member of the Music Teacher’s National Association, National Guild of Piano Teachers, and Chamber Music of America.
