Cuban Performance Lab: Strings & Winds

Ages 15 and up

Discover the energy, rhythm, and artistry of Cuban music in this dynamic ensemble experience for teen musicians. Open to string and wind students, we’ll explore the rich traditions of Cuban charanga and related styles while learning how melody, rhythm, and groove come together in one of the world’s most influential musical traditions.

Led by Ceylon Mitchell, we’ll rehearse authentic repertoire and develop essential skills like ensemble communication, stylistic interpretation, rhythmic precision, phrasing, and musical expression. Rehearsals also introduce the cultural and historical context behind the music, helping us connect performance with tradition.

The class begins as a strings and winds sectional — with a focus on style, articulation, and ensemble preparation — and concludes with rehearsals alongside a professional rhythm section before a final performance.

Designed for curious and motivated teen musicians, this is a unique opportunity to explore music beyond the standard ensemble experience while growing confidence and versatility as a performer.

The session culminates in a live performance with professional musicians in an authentic Cuban-style setting.
