In this lecture-recital, pianist and composer Sam Post introduces the Well-“Tampered” Clavier, his rhythmic reimagining of Bach’s The Well-Tempered Clavier. Post, with pianist Ralitza Patcheva, will explore how this celebrated collection of 24 preludes and fugues can take on new life through a contemporary rhythmic lens.
The program begins with Bach’s original conception of The Well-Tempered Clavier and the tuning innovations that made it possible to explore all 24 major and minor keys. Through musical examples, Post examines the fascinating compromises behind keyboard temperament and demonstrates how different tuning systems shaped the sound of earlier music. He then explores how his rhythmic arrangements preserve Bach’s harmony and counterpoint while expanding the music’s rhythmic language through syncopation, altered meters, and influences from modern piano styles, including jazz, tango, and dance music.
Designed for both musicians and general audiences, the lecture-recital reveals new possibilities within a familiar masterpiece.
