Beethoven’s “heroic” style transformed music through its unprecedented scale, intensity, and expressive power. While these qualities are often associated with his symphonies, they emerged just as vividly in his chamber music.
Join composer Evan Meier and chamber music faculty Vasily Popov and Ralitza Patcheva as they explore how Beethoven’s Enlightenment ideals found musical expression in his heroic style. Through performance and discussion, audiences will discover the foundations of sonata form before examining the groundbreaking Cello Sonata No. 3 in A Major, Op. 69, a work that expanded the expressive role of the cello and exemplifies Beethoven’s middle-period innovations. Drawing on Beethoven’s sketchbooks and his collaborations with leading cellists of the day, the lecture offers a window into his creative process and evolving musical language.
The program also features selections from Beethoven’s early violin sonata and concludes with a piano trio arrangement of the Allegretto from the Seventh Symphony in the style of the acclaimed Beethoven for Three recordings.
