In recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month, our latest Community Conversation, hosted by Evan Meier, explores the music of Argentina with pianist Agustin Muriago, a native of Argentina and Associate Professor of Keyboard Studies at the Peabody Institute.
Agustin reflects on his own path from classical piano training to a deeper exploration of Argentine folk music and considers how generations of Argentine composers have brought together European classical traditions and musical influences from their homeland. Through performances at the piano, he explores the rhythms and character of traditions including the milonga, vidalita, and tango, illustrating the remarkable variety of music found across Argentina.
The conversation also offers a look at Agustin’s 2024 album, “Sur: Piano Music from Argentina.” The project grew from his search for lesser-known works by Argentine composers, including music that had rarely been recorded or performed. His research eventually took him to a Buenos Aires music library, where he explored hundreds of scores before selecting works to learn, perform, and record.
Hear Agustin perform at Levine on October 11 as part of Piano Music of Latin America & Spain with Victor Galindo & Friends. Led by Levine piano faculty member Victor Galindo, the free recital also features Topher Ruggiero, Dana Smith, and Ralitza Patcheva in a program showcasing piano music from Venezuela, Argentina, Spain, Cuba, and Brazil.
