Education
Sonia received her BM in Voice Performance from Seoul National University before going on to earn her MM in Voice Performance from the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatorio in Milan, Italy.
As a Performer
Sonia has won numerous awards at vocal competitions, including the 1st prize at the Flaviano Labo International Competition and 3rd place at the Mario Basiola International Competition. Her other prizes include awards at the Imperia, Katia Ricciarelli, Viotti, and Angelica Catalani International Competitions in Italy, the Belvedere International Competition in Austria, and the Vinas International Vocal Competition in Spain.
As a Teacher
Sonia has been teaching voice since the age of 20. She was an adjunct professor at Seoul National University, Yonsei University, Hanyang University, Suwon University, Korea National University of Arts, and Samyook University. Though her performing career has largely focused on opera, Sonia has extensive experience teaching music theatre and has directed many musicals in addition to five operas with teenage singers. Sonia teaches professional singers in the traditional Bel Canto technique and has coached many high school students who have gone on to major in vocal music in college.
At Levine
Sonia joined Levine’s voice faculty in 2024.
Teaching Philosophy
Sonia is well-versed in teaching singing in Italian, German, and French, as well as opera and Broadway genres. Everyone has a different voice when they are born, and she works with each individual to find their own voice and help them enjoy singing as a way to bring joy into their lives.
