Misbin Family Memorial Chamber Music Competition celebrates 10 years

This year, we celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Misbin Family Memorial Chamber Music Competition with a special concert in May. The performance featured the 2023 winners, the world premiere of a commissioned chamber work by former winner composer/pianist Sam Post, and performances by past competition winners. In October, winners of the 2023 competition performed at the National Gallery of Art.

The annual competition is jointly presented with Washington Performing Arts and is open to instrumental student and amateur adult chamber music ensembles.

This competition is made possible by the generous support of Dr. Robert Misbin.

Camp Levine at THEARC

Camp Levine at THEARC in Southeast DC had record-breaking enrollment this summer thanks to the DC Government’s Office of Out of School Time. Campers aged 4 to 12 years old spent six weeks singing, dancing, playing instruments, performing musical theatre, creating visual art, and enjoying a variety of games and activities. From morning sings to final performances, campers learned new skills, gained confidence, created lasting friendships, and had a lot of fun!

For the fifth year in a row, Camp Levine was  recognized in the Washington City Paper’s annual “Best of DC” issue as one of the “Best Summer Camps in DC,” and we won the title of #1 Summer Camp as we did in 2021 and 2022.

Step-Afrika-2

Guitar Ensemble Collaboration Project

Guitarists from Levine Music and Peabody Prep collaborated in a joint ensemble project this past year. In addition to rehearsals, the students performed in master classes, worked with composers, and enjoyed sightseeing in Baltimore and DC. Throughout their time together, the students created a strong community of young classical guitarists.

The project culminated with a trip to New York City for a week of exceptional learning, performing, and concert-attending opportunities at the Guitar Foundation of America’s 2023 International Convention at Manhattan School of Music. Together, they participated in technique classes, attended concerts with world-renowned musicians, and performed for peers and the community during this exciting trip.

Levine & The French-American Piano Society

FrAmPSThis fall, we announced a new partnership with The French-American Piano Society to foster cultural exchange and advance the French piano repertoire within the Washington community. This collaboration represents a significant step forward in promoting excellence in piano education and performance.

Through this dynamic partnership, over the next four years, we’ll develop a French piano repertoire curriculum, present master classes and recitals featuring French pianists, host a French piano repertoire competition, and create a cultural exchange for young pianists in France and Washington, DC.

Annual Showcase Concert

Our Spring Showcase Concert celebrated a year of spectacular music-making and student achievement. The student performances represented our wide range of departments and ages, showcasing students’ love and dedication to their music studies. The event included the winner of our Cogen Concerto Competition, William Wu, performing Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G Major with an orchestra comprised of Levine faculty and students.

Moments of Inspiration

Each year at Levine is full of moments of music and inspiration. Behind each of those moments is a teacher and a mentor—a Levine faculty member who guided us toward musical discovery. Every day in every Levine studio, someone is learning something new. With the support of our board of trustees, we were proud to launch a landmark faculty compensation initiative this year, a major investment in the artists who inspire us and realize our mission every day and with every note.

On behalf of the whole Levine Music family, thank you for making us your musical home. It is only with your help that we can reach our goals and aspirations.
