Enjoy an afternoon of stories, songs, and games featuring the biggest member of the string family. Bring your musical imagination and your sense of fun and adventure!
2-3 PM — Bass Petting Zoo: Explore the amazing sound world of the bass in a fun, relaxed environment! This session will explore set-up and first sounds to help you answer the question “Is the bass for me?” (Answer: Yes!). Plus, a Q&A session for parents/caregivers that will cover common questions like “Can I fit a bass in my car?” (Yes!) and, “Do you have to be really tall to play the bass?” (No!).
3-4 PM — Mini Lessons: Students will work one-on-one with bass faculty Jessica Eig and Millie Martin and have the opportunity to observe other lessons.

This workshop offers repertoire coaching, scales and technique practice, sight-reading guidance, and mock auditions to help students strengthen their audition skills.
In collaboration with Meadowmount School of Music, we are pleased to present violinist and Meadowmount Gurrena Fellow Hiu Sing Fan in a spectacular performance and a master class with Levine students.

About Hiu Sing Fan:
Hong Kong violinist Hiu Sing Fan is the Second Prize and Audience Choice Award winner at the 2025 Dallas International Violin Competition, a recent prizewinner at the Banff International String Quartet Competition, and is ranked among the top six at both the 2025 Premio Paganini International Violin Competition in Italy and the 2024 George Enescu International Violin Competition in Romania.
As a soloist, Fan has performed with Camerata Salzburg, the Hong Kong Sinfonietta, and the Dallas Chamber Symphony Orchestra, and has served as Guest Concertmaster of the Cologne Chamber Orchestra in Germany.
He has participated and performed in festivals including the Verbier Festival, Marvão Music Academy, Verão Clássico, as well as the Meadowmount School of Music, and the Great Mountains Music Festival and School. He has worked with notable artists including Leonidas Kavakos, Nikolaj Szeps-Znaider, Ferenc Rados, Aaron Rosand, Quatuor Ébène, and the Emerson String Quartet, and has performed under conductors including Christoph Poppen, Peter Bay, and Wing-Sie Yip.
Fan received the Cordelia Lee Beattie Foundation Scholarship and the Betty & Daniel Bloomfield Fund Scholarship during his studies at The Juilliard School, where he studied with I-Hao Lee and Hyo Kang. He earned his master’s and artist diploma degrees at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München in Germany, studying with Julia Fischer, Christoph Poppen, and Lena Neudauer. He is currently pursuing his Doctor of Musical Arts degree at Northwestern University under Gerardo Ribeiro.

Experience the artistry and insight of cellist Erin Ellis as she works with Levine students in a special master class. Audiences are invited to observe the coaching process up close and gain a deeper look at the technique, interpretation, and musical choices that shape a performance.
Cellist Erin Ellis leads a versatile career as a performer and teacher. She has appeared as a soloist, chamber musician, and educator across the United States as well as abroad. Her CD recording of J. Dall’Abaco’s 11 Capricci for solo cello, released on Albany Records, garnered positive reviews noting “flawless” technique and “a fresh approach.” Dr. Ellis performs regularly as part of the Meliora Duo with pianist Dr. Kevin Chance and as a soloist and chamber musician with the Atlanta Baroque Orchestra.
A dedicated music educator, she maintains an active private studio and is Associate Professor of Cello at West Virginia University, where she also coaches WVU’s graduate string quartet (Montani Quartet), coordinates the string chamber music program, and serves as Director of Graduate Studies. She regularly presents topics on pedagogy at state, regional, and national conferences and workshops. Erin spends her summers in Leicester, VT, performing and coaching chamber music at Point CounterPoint Chamber Music Camp.
Born in Birmingham, Alabama, Dr. Ellis began her cello studies as a Suzuki student at the age of 4. She has completed Suzuki teacher training with Tanya Carey and Andrea Yun.

Established in 1974 and celebrated for its dynamic performances — often performed standing and from memory — the Grammy-nominated Swedish ensemble is internationally acclaimed for its distinctive energy, deep musical connection, and commitment to inspiring the next generation of musicians. This event is presented in collaboration with the Embassy of Sweden. All are welcome!
Biography:
Established in 1974, Camerata Nordica has garnered a reputation for its distinctive performance style, captivating audiences by performing standing up, often from memory. Their dynamic energy and shared musical purpose form the core of the ensemble’s identity. Three of their recordings have been nominated for Grammy Awards.
The octet consists of principal players from the orchestra, performing selected pieces by heart, showcasing the ensemble’s deep musical connection and commitment to each piece.
The Camerata Nordica Octet will be making its North American début tour in 2025-26. In addition to frequent tours across Sweden, the Camerata Nordica chamber orchestra has graced numerous stages in the United States, Canada, South America, and other international locations, earning high praise from audiences and critics alike. Their UK début at the prestigious BBC Proms in 2013 further solidified their acclaim and reputation.
The ensemble places great importance on engaging and inspiring young audiences, actively developing projects tailored to their needs.
This event is presented in partnership with the Embassy of Sweden.

Internationally acclaimed violist and assistant principal violist in the National Symphony Orchestra, Dana Kelley, visits Levine to lead a master class featuring violists of Levine’s Washington Musical Pathways Initiative (WMPI). All are welcome!
Violist Dana Kelley, Assistant Principal of the National Symphony Orchestra, has been praised for her rich and beautiful tone. She has been a top prizewinner in the Sphinx Music Competition, the Irving M. Klein International String Competition, the M-Prize Chamber Arts Competition, and Concert Artists Guild Victor Elmaleh Competition. She is also a member of the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra and the Orchestra of St. Luke’s Chamber Ensemble, and has performed as guest Principal of the Santa Fe Opera Orchestra and as a member of the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra.
Dana’s performance schedule has brought her to many prestigious venues and festivals, including multiple recitals at Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall, Merkin Recital Hall at New York’s Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, the Koch Theater, the Ravinia Festival, and Bravo! Vail. Dana has collaborated with artists such as Ralph Kirshbaum, Nobuko Imai and Miriam Fried, pianists Leon Fleisher, Anne-Marie MacDermott and Misha Dichter, and Astrid Schween of the Juilliard String Quartet.
Dana was a 2014-2016 Fellow in Ensemble Connect – a performance and teaching program of Carnegie Hall, The Juilliard School, and The Weill Music Institute. She received her Bachelor’s of Music from the Blair School of Music at Vanderbilt University, studying violin with Cornelia Heard and viola with Kathryn Plummer, and completed her Master’s of Music degree at the New England Conservatory as a student of Kim Kashkashian. Dana received an Artist Diploma in String Quartet Studies with the Argus String Quartet as the 2017-2019 Graduate Quartet in Residence at The Juilliard School.

Internationally acclaimed cellist and faculty member at the Manhattan School of Music, Tommy Mesa, visits Levine to lead a master class featuring cellists of Levine’s Merit Programs. In collaboration with the Manhattan School of Music, this event will culminate with a brief information session and Q&A with MSM and Professor Mesa.
Cuban-American cellist Dr. Tommy Mesa has established himself as one of the most charismatic, innovative, and engaging performers of his generation. The recipient of Lincoln Center’s 2025 Avery Fisher Career Grant and the Sphinx Organization’s 2023 Medal of Excellence, its highest honor, Mesa has appeared as soloist at the Supreme Court of the United States on four occasions and with major orchestras including the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl, The Cleveland Orchestra, The Philadelphia Orchestra, and the symphony orchestras of Indianapolis, Madison, New Jersey, San Antonio, and Santa Barbara, among others. Mesa gave the world premiere of Jessie Montgomery’s cello concerto Divided in 2022 and has been the exclusive soloist since, performing at major halls across the United States and Brazil, including Miami’s New World Center, Nashville’s Schermerhorn Center, and Carnegie Hall. His orchestral recording debut of the work was released in July 2023 on Deutsche Grammophon.
Mesa has given masterclasses at institutions such as U.C Berkeley, Boston Conservatory, the Colburn School, DePaul University, Meadowmount School of Music, University of Miami, University of Nevada-Las Vegas, Northwestern University, and Walnut Hill School. Previously, he held faculty positions at SUNY Purchase, Sphinx Performance Academy, and The Heifetz Institute’s PEG Program, Music Mountain Festival and School, Brooklyn Conservatory of Music, Montecito International Music Festival, St. Petersburg International Music Academy, and The Mozart Academy at John Jay College in New York City.
Mesa’s career launched after becoming the First Prize winner in the 2016 Sphinx Competition and a winner of the 2017 Astral Artists National Auditions. He received his BM from The Juilliard School, MM from Northwestern University, and his DMA from the Manhattan School of Music. His principal teachers were Timothy Eddy, Julia Lichten, Hans Jorgen Jensen, Mark Churchill, Ross Harbaugh, and Wells Cunningham. Mesa performs on a Nicolò Gagliano cello made in 1767 and a bow by Andre Richaume, both generously loaned to him by CANIMEX INC in Drummondville, Canada.
